It has been another busy month for the club. Our membership continues to rise with some returning to golf after a few years and several previous members returning to the club after a period of absence and new members some of whom are returning to golf. Our Junior Section is now in double figures. The standard of the playing surfaces continues to improve, though the recent heavy rain has slowed progress.
CLUBHOUSE. The Clubhouse has now been partially opened to members with a one way system implemented to meet Covid-19 requirements, though some members are having difficulty in following the signage for “Entry”, “Exit” and “No Exit” one way system, though this is not proving to be a major problem. Lee McFarlane has very kindly offered to install the cooker hood and ventilation ducting to enable the kitchen to comply with Food Hygiene Regulations. A return inspection by East Ayrshire Council Food Hygiene will be arranged when work is completed. We are currently providing hot snacks and hot and cold drinks on competition days and the self-service hot drinks machine is available in the main hall when the kitchen is closed. Tables have been arranged to provide 2 metre distancing and members are requested to sanitise their tables and chairs before they leave.
DRAINAGE. Despite the sterling efforts of Billie Lammie and his mini digger the low-lying areas of the fairways remain water-logged after heavy rain and further work will be required when funds are available. There is a suspicion that the level of the loch has risen raising the water table on the course which negates the drainage system on the golf course. This will require further investigation and discussions with the loch owners.
NEW GREENKEEPER. We have been fortunate to engage Bobby Flynn as our full-time greenkeeper and he has made a good start at improving the playing surfaces and clearing some of the ditches. Any compliments on the condition of the course should be communicated to Bobby Flynn, any complaints should be made to the committee. The greenkeeper is now opening the Clubhouse at 0800 every working day and the Clubhouse will remain open until 1600 for use by members.
MACHINERY. A problem occurred with the electrics on the Fairway Mower (again) which was repaired by Hamilton Brothers of Tarbolton and all appears well now. The Rough Cutter is now working well and the rough adjacent to the fairways has now been reduced to aid wayward ball detection. One of the small machines is causing problems and is shortly to be sent to Ramsay & Jackson for overhaul and repair. The trailer hinges have been replaced and is now available for transporting small machinery around the course. The new Grass Collector has arrived, and we are learning the best setting to clear the dead grass from the course.
COMPETITIONS. Sunday Competitions have started, and the Wednesday Competition is reduced to the first Wednesday of each month. We have had a Juniors competition where Evan McBlain provided a very creditable score and was presented with his certificate and a medal for completing the course. The draw for the Championships has been reworked and posted in the Clubhouse.
DONATIONS. Ricky Nicol, golf coach, has very kindly donated a set of clubs and electric trolley to the club. His commitment to the club is very much appreciated. This donation adds to the other clubs and bags donated by generous club members.
SCOTTISH WATER. A representative from Scottish Water has the surveyed the mains water provision to the Clubhouse and Greens Sprinkler system. We await his report.
